Take Action to Help Turn the Tide

Advocate for Phone Free Schools

  • Add your name to our phone free movement here!

It’s vital to consider the entire school day in order to understand the impact cell phones have on student outcomes and the need for a bell-to-bell phone-free policy. Schools are valuable not only for academic learning, but as places where critical social-emotional learning and essential life skills development take place. Policies that only limit phone use during class time fall short. This only addresses academic outcomes, whereas all-day policies promote the success of the whole child.

  • Below are the current written policies about cell phone use at Scarborough Schools:

JFCK - Student Use of Cellular Telephones and Other Electronic Devices

JFCK-R - Student Use of Cellular Telephones and Other Electronic Devices

Our current policy allows students to use phones between class periods and during lunch periods.

In contrast, The Phone-Free Schools Movement, defines “Phone-Free School” as any school which adheres to a first bell to last bell no-phone policy in place, that is clearly communicated to all stakeholders and strictly enforced by all administration and staff (with exceptions in place for students with special educational or medical needs that require a personal device, as well as an office phone made available, or other means of communication provided by the school should it be necessary to communicate during the school day).

Delay Smartphones Until High School

Join Scarborough parents in signing the Wait Until 8th Pledge, and recruit friends too!

Note, this means wait until AFTER 8TH GRADE (i.e. high school) for smartphones. Basic phones and tracking watches are okay! (But not in school)

Pledges age up on July 1st. After July 1st you can sign the pledge for your incoming kindergartener.

“Schools should ensure that classroom learning and social time are phone-free experiences.”

-US Surgeon General, Dr. Vivek H. Murthy, in the the New York Times, June 17, 2024
